Tourist attractions in Istanbul are like a city that is the gateway to the European continent, especially for Turkey. In the previous article entitled tourist attractions in Turkey, the author explained that Turkey is 1 country, with 2 continents.
Most of Turkey's state zones are on the Asian continent, and only 2 cities are included in the European continent, one of which is Istanbul.
Apart from that, Istanbul is also known as the City of All Cities. Because in the past, Istanbul has inscribed history as a city, as well as the center of civilization.
Hagia Sophia
The Hagia Sophia was built by Constantinius II in 360 AD. Initially it was called Megali Eklesia'dir or big church. After the 5th century, the name was changed to Hagia Sophia, which means Holy Wisdom. For 916 years, Hagia Sophia was used as a church by Christians in Constantinople. Yes, the city of Istanbul used to be called Constantinople. Then in the year 1453 AD, the city of Constantinople was conquered by Sultan Mehmed II of the Ottoman Empire. After this conquest the city of Constantinople changed its name to Istanbul.
The change of the name of this city also coincided with the change of function of the Hagia Sophia itself. What was originally a church, was changed its function into a mosque. Hagia Sophia itself was used as a mosque for 482 years. And now Hagia Sophia is a museum which is visited by local and foreign tourists.
Topkapi Palace
Topkapi Palace is a palace used by the Ottoman Empire starting in the 15th century. Its construction began in 1459 on orders from Sultan Mehmed Alfatih, 6 years after the conquest of Istanbul. Topkapi originally had the name Yeni Saray or Saray-ı Cedîd-i Âmire which means New Palace. Then where the Old Palace is? The Old Palace now resides in Istanbul University. In the 19th century the name of the palace was changed to Topkapi which means Cannon Gate.In 1856 Sultan Abdulmecit moved the place of his government to Dolmabahce Palace. Topkapi Palace was eventually used as a library and repository of royal treasures. In 1923, Topkapi Palace was turned into a museum.
Topkapi Palace occupies an enormous area. If it can be compared, the area is like the Yogyakarta Palace. From Topkapi Palace we can see the beautiful Bosphorus and Golden Horn. Its location which is on a hill by the sea makes this palace so beautiful to the eye.
