Reunion, Beautiful Island Surrounded by Ferocious Sharks
Reunion Island is located in the warm Indian Ocean, the Island is called the beautiful paradise of Africa. This island also has an active volcano called the Piton de la Fournaise.
The volcanic activity has created lush vegetation that attracts unique wildlife. Hiking is a great way to get around the island, and there are plenty of trails available. If you are a diver, you will enjoy the diversity of marine life in island waters.
Reunion Island is culturally rich. You'll experience a blend of Creole, Indian, African, Chinese and French heritage. From language, festivals and food, you'll be spoiled for choice on the island of Reunion. You can stay at the boutique guesthouse which is there.
Reunion Island suddenly became famous, because there was found the debris of what is believed to be Malaysia Airlines MH 370, which had been missing since 2014. This island in the Indian Ocean is known as unluckiest Place in The world, because disasters often occur from volcanic eruptions, to the discovery of the plane wreckage.
Debris such as airplane wings and metal were found in the waters around the town of Saint Andre last week. So far, the debris has been brought to France for further investigation.
For surfers, Reunion Island has very challenging waves. At least, on average every year, the waves there are 5 meters high.
One of the most famous fauna on Réunion Island is the shark, which eventually made swimming and surfing banned there.
Réunion Island became infamous for its shark attack cases. A total of 11 people have died in shark attacks since 2011. There were more than 50 recorded shark attacks between 1988 and 2016.
In 2013, the local government enacted a law that provoked controversy. Surfers are not allowed to surf haphazardly!
Surfers are only allowed to surf in areas that have been provided, which are mostly close to the lagoon. Otherwise, a fine of 38 Euros may apply. Euro currency is the official currency there.
The regulations issued in 2013 are still in effect. However, some tourists do not pay attention to it, and still surf freely in the ocean. They are looking for a super challenging wave. In fact, the regulation was made to save tourists from shark attacks. In nine out of ten cases, the shark that attacked was a bull shark.
Marine ecologist Michael Heithaus said bull sharks were taking advantage of the fact that sediment was being carried away from the slopes of the volcano.
Michael says the murky water makes an ideal hunting ground for these "smart" predators.
The Réunion Island government stepped in on the shark problem. In 2012 they exterminated 20 sharks that were considered aggressive. The following year, after a 15-year-old surfer was killed by a shark attack on the beach, they exterminated 90 more sharks followed by a ban on surfing in the waters.
These two things become obstacles for tourism on Reunion Island. Lastly, regarding the wreckage of the suspected Malaysia Airlines MH 370 plane that was found there, more and more people are branding the island as the 'unluckiest place in the world?'.
Reunion Island is surrounded by beautiful beaches, it has lush tropical rainforest, making it the perfect destination for nature lovers. Reunion Island is a photographer's paradise for its trekking trails, majestic volcano and gorgeous turquoise waters.
The friendly local people make the holiday experience even more enjoyable.
