The Best Places to View the Aurora in Norway

Aurora Hunting Tips for Norway

With clear night skies and a location on the Arctic Circle, Norway is one of the best places to watch the aurora borealis, or the northern lights. There are a number of points where the view of the aurora looks particularly stunning.

Northern Norway is the most suitable area for aurora observation purposes, one of which is the City of Tromso. Despite the cold weather, Tromso is a lively city with plenty of food options and beautiful beaches surrounded by forests.

Another of Norway's best places to see the aurora borealis is Lofoten, which is considered one of the most beautiful islands in the world. The island's remote location and free from various artificial light pollution supports sky observation.

The view of the sky is combined with the expanse of the sea and the fjord, a kind of bay that comes from melting glaciers. The combination provides a natural backdrop that is all the more extraordinary when capturing the northern lights phenomenon.

Most people take a tour package when they want to see the aurora. Because it is the easiest way. You don't have to bother thinking about this and that. All you have to do is pay the fees and they will take care of everything.

But one thing that may not be widely known is that the Aurora can be seen almost daily in the dark months (winter) if the sky is clear. If the sky is cloudy, then paying for the tour is useless. The important and perhaps difficult thing for most people is, Aurora is best seen when far from the city. So you can't just fly to Tromso and try to see through the hotel window, you can only see the shadow (unless you're really, really lucky because the aurora level is very strong).

Another choice of places to observe the aurora is in Kirkenes, a city in northern Norway that borders Russia. Other Arctic islands are also suitable for clear aurora views, including the North Cape.

The best times to visit northern Norway for aurora viewing are winter and autumn. Both seasons have long nights with short days and moderate variations in sunlight.

Peak observations usually last from early October to late March. At the height of summer, the sun barely sets, creating another mesmerizing natural phenomenon, known as the midnight sun.

Observations from fishing villages are also an attractive alternative. The view of the aurora among the quaint fishing huts, the arctic jungle, and the mountains and fjords in the distance, creates a very peaceful atmosphere.

A lot of people recommend renting a car in Norway. Because if you have your own vehicle, you can go to a small town or a deserted village to see Aurora. You can even stay in accommodation that is far from the city lights. Rent a car from Oslo and drive all the way to the Arctic Circle. You may be able to see the Aurora, to be precise, before reaching Trondheim. It's actually cheaper to rent a car and drive to Trondheim than fly there. So if you want to save money, it's best to rent a car from Oslo. Or you can also fly to Trondheim and then rent a car there.
