In the 9th to 13th centuries, Bagan was the capital city of the Pagan Kingdom. During this period some 10,000 temples were built around the capital city next to the Irrawaddy River. In the golden age of the Pagan Kingdom, thousands of religious buildings were built around the kingdom. Unfortunately, some are destroyed due to natural and human processes

It is now believed that about 2,000 temples and other structures survive, and could rival the archaeological sites of Angkor in Cambodia
