Venice Canals Los Angeles

Venice Canals

When Abbot Kinney undertook the construction of Venice in 1905, he had 16 miles of canals dug to drain the swamp, for housing development.
The majority of the canals were paved in the 1920s to make way for new horseless carriages, but a few blocks of canals remain south of Venice Blvd, about a block from the beach.
Although many of the houses around the canal have begun to crumble, most have been restored, creating a cute area for walking or paddling. The canals are a bit dry in the summer.
