Best Things to Do in Algarve Portugal

What is Algarve Portugal Known for?

The Algarve is one of the best family vacation spots and is also known as the most beautiful area in Portugal with a cool and sunny climate all year round. This city is a must-visit when you're on vacation with the family, as it has golden beaches, azure waters, and the hidden beaches of Benagil's cave.
Here there are also many choices of hotels, apartments, and villas at affordable prices.

The gentle climate evoked by the Atlantic Ocean, soft sandy beaches, delicious cuisine, pleasant coastal views; making Portugal's Algarve one of Europe's favorite vacation destinations.
Here are some of the best things you can do in the Algarve, from relaxing on the beach, exploring coastal caves, playing golf and getting lost in the charming old towns.

Ponta da Piedade

Headland south of Lagos is no less stunning. The limestone piles and cliffs have a reddish hue supported by natural arches and caves.
You can descend into the crystal clear waters, which are completely protected by rocks and have a dazzling emerald color.
You can enjoy the views from the headland, which stretches to Cape St Vincent in the west, and then return to Lagos by motorboat, for a trip to explore the caves and tributaries.

Praia da Rocha Algarve Portugal

Praia da Rocha

Another stunning beach is Praia da Rocha, combining views of the rugged Algarve coast with its pristine sands and swirling waves.
You can come to the foot of the strange rock formations for selfies, and if you don't mind, take a walk along the surrounding coast, to discover a secret beach framed by giant sculpted stones.
The main sight is the expansive beach, with consistent waves that surfers can ride.
Behind and to the east is the 17th century Fort Santa Catarina, designed by the Neapolitan military mastermind Alexandre Massai.

Cape St Vincent Algarve Portugal

Cape St Vincent

On this headland in Sagres you will stand at the most southwestern point in Europe.
Despite its geographical significance, it's also a stunning location, with cliffs 75 meters above the ocean, and cinematic views of the rocky seascape to the north, as well as to the east towards Sagres Point.
There is a lighthouse here, built in 1846 on the foundations of an abandoned convent. There are now several souvenir shops and a small museum.

Praia da Falésia Algerva Portugal

Praia da Falésia

Stretching for nearly seven kilometers is a golden sandy beach lined with striped cliffs of varying ocher colors. Praia da Falésia is the largest beach in the Algarve, as well as the longest in Portugal.
The combination of pale sand, blue sea and pale red stones makes this tourist spot look beautiful in the off season.
There is a cliff-top trail through the pine forest and with great views. Come during sunset when the light is phenomenal.

São Lourenço Church Algarve Portugal

São Lourenço Church

In Loulé there is a Baroque church from the 18th century which you should visit.
The luxurious whitewashed exterior, walls and ceilings are clad in magnificent blue azulejos, traditional tin-clad ceramic tiles, dating from the 1730s.
They are so vast that the church is often called Igreja de Louça (Chinese Church). The tiles were made by Policarpo de Oliveira Bernardes, who is recognized as one of the masters of the art, and depict scenes from the life of St Lawrence.

Best Time to Visit Algarve

You can visit Algarve any time. Travelers on a budget should visit Portugal outside of the summer months and major holidays, like Christmas and Easter. Since this is the season when most people plan long weekends and vacations, the cost of flights and hotels goes up, even outside the major cities. Generally speaking, the most effective months are January and February, with late spring and late fall coming.
